Application of Principal Component Factor Analysis in Quantifying Size and Morphological Indices of Domestic Rabbits International Journal of Morphology
Yakubu,A; Ayoade,J. A.
Body weight and four morphostructural traits namely body length, heart girth, thigh circumference and ear length of 103 New Zealand White x Chinchilla crossbred rabbits were measured. The investigation aimed at describing objectively the interdependence among conformation traits and to predict body weight from their independent factor scores using principal component analysis. Phenotypic correlations between body weight and body dimensions were highly significant (r=0.61 0.91; P<0.01). Pairwise correlations of the body shape characters ranged from moderate to high values. From the factor analysis with varimax rotation of the intercorrelated traits, two principal components which accounted for 90.27% of the total variance were extracted. The first...

The effect of partial and total substitution of soybean meal crude protein (SBM) by canola meal (CM) on live weight (LW), daily weight gain (DWG), daily feed intake (DFI) and feed conversion (FC) in female rabbits are provided. Rabbits were evaluated from weaning period (43 days of age) to adult life when they are capable of reproduction (150 days of age). Forty-eight White New Zealand females were used and distributed in four treatments. SBM was substituted at 00%, 33%, 66% and 100% levels by CM. The partial or total substitution of SBM by CM did not change (P > 0.05) the LW after 70 days old. Dunnett’s test showed that, independently of substitution level, FC of animals fed on meal with 33% SBM substitution by CM from age 43 to 90 days and 43 to 150...

Correlation between systolic function and presence of myofibroblasts in doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy Ciência Rural
Gava,Fábio Nelson; Silva,Sheila Nogueira Saraiva da; Rosa,Fernando Azadinho; Ortiz,Edna Mireya Gómez; Rodrigues,Bruno Cristian; Bandarra,Márcio de Barros; Vasconcelos,Rosemeri de Oliveira; Camacho,Aparecido Antonio.
ABSTRACT: Cardiotoxicity induced by doroxubicin generates systolic disfunction and myocardial remodeling with presence of myofibroblasts. These cells are thought to be attracted to the injured heart to avoid the development of congestive heart failure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the systolic dysfunction generated by doxorubicin through Doppler echocardiography, and its correlation with the presence of myofibroblasts in the myocardium. Twenty-five New Zealand White rabbits were divided into two groups (control, and treated with doxorubicin). The drug was administered for six weeks; Doppler echocardiography was performed before the first, and after the last administration of doxorubicin. Immuno detection of myofibroblasts was performed by...

Dexamethasone-induced reactivation of bovine herpesvirus type 5 latent infection in experimentally infected rabbits results in a broader distribution of latent viral DNA in the brain BJMBR
Mayer,S.V.; de Quadros,V.L.; Vogel,F.S.F.; Winkelmann,E.R.; Arenhart,S.; Weiblen,R.; Flores,E.F..
Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5) is a major agent of meningoencephalitis in cattle and establishes latent infections mainly in sensory nerve ganglia. The distribution of latent BHV-5 DNA in the brain of rabbits prior to and after virus reactivation was studied using a nested PCR. Fifteen rabbits inoculated intranasally with BHV-5 were euthanized 60 days post-inoculation (group A, N = 8) or submitted to dexamethasone treatment (2.6 mg kg-1 day-1, im, for 5 days) and euthanized 60 days later (group B, N = 7) for tissue examination. Two groups of BHV-1-infected rabbits (C, N = 3 and D, N = 3) submitted to each treatment were used as controls. Viral DNA of group A rabbits was consistently detected in trigeminal ganglia (8/8), frequently in cerebellum (5/8),...

Dimethyl sulfoxide effects on the febrile response to lipopolysaccharide injection in rabbits Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,A.H.; Valadão,C.A.A.; Selegatto,M.A.; Almeida,R.M.; Macari,M..
The present study was designed to determine whether DMSO causes an inhibition on the development of fever in rabbits. The intravenous administration of LPS (1.5µg.kg-1 body weight) caused fever in both saline+LPS and DMSO+LPS group, but the onset and magnitude of the induced fever were significantly different. The saline+LPS group presented a prototypic biphasic fever whereas the DMSO+LPS group presented an attenuated febrile response, but it was not abolished. These results suggest that DMSO may provide a protective mechanism against pyrogen LPS, probably through the modulation of NF-kB mediated events, such as fever.

Migration of Schistosoma mansoni sambon (Trematoda, Schistosomatidae) from skin to lungs in immunized NZ rabbits (Lagomorpha, Leporidae) by autoradiographic analysis Zoologia
Pinto,R. Magalhães; Noronha,Dely; Almeida,Marília S. S; Katz,Naftale; Tendler,Miriam.
Skin to lung migration of Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907 - (75 Se) - selenomethionine-labeled cercariae was tracked by tissue autoradiography on days 1, 4, 6, 8 after challenge, in rabbits immunized with a S. mansoni derived saline extract. Either in vaccinated animals or in those of the control unprimed group, the peak of skin schistosomula occurs 24hs after infection. Comparison between peaks of lungs migrating larvae showed that, in control animals, the increase of worm burden in this site, is detected on the 6th day post-infection, differing from immunized rabbits, in which this peak occurs on day 4, when skin and lungs counts are still equivalent, decreasing gradually, showing a different pattern of the S. mansoni migration and suggesting that main...

Pacheco,Maria Rita; Ferreira,Nilson; Melo,Válder Rodrigues; Baraldi-Artoni,Silvana Martinez; Orsi,Antonio Marcos; Machado,Márcia Rita Fernandes; Oliveira,Fabrício Singaretti de.
The hepatic megakaryocytic cells of New Zealand White rabbit in the intrauterine phase and in the immediate postnatal period were studied. Statistical analysis of the data concerning the cytoplasm and nucleus of those cells, i.e., area, perimeter, maximum diameter, minimum diameter, volume and shape factor, presented significant differences (p<0.01) for F values concerning the life phases studied on15th, 22nd and 29th day of intrauterine life and 10th day of postnatal life, and for F values for animal within each phase. The Tukey’s test showed that most of the parameters studied in the cytoplasm and nucleus of these megakaryocytic cells presented the lowest values on the 15th day of intrauterine life and the highest on the 22nd day of the same phase.

Silva,Adriana M. da; Flores,Eduardo F.; Weiblen,Rudi; Canto,Marister C.; Irigoyen,Luiz F.; Roehe,Paulo M.; Sousa,Renato S. de.
This article describes the main aspects of bovine herpesvirus type-5 (BHV-5) neurologic infection and disease in rabbits, a candidate animal model for studying BHV-5 neuropathogenesis. Intranasal inoculation of weanling rabbits with a Brazilian BHV-5 isolate produced neurological disease and death in 78.8% (26/33) of the animals. Neurological signs started as early as 5 days post-inoculation and lasted from 10-12 hours up to several days. Most animals evolved to a moribund state or death within 24 (69.2%) to 48 hours (88.5%). Neurological disease was characterized by excitability or depression, tremors, bruxism, walking or running in circles, backward arching of the head and body, incoordination, backward and sideways falling, paddling, profound depression...

Patterns of Sudanophilic Lesions at Ostia of Descending Thoracic and Abdominal Aorta in Cholesterol-Fed Adult Rabbits International Journal of Morphology
Shahid,Uzma; Butt,Shadab Ahmed; Zareen,Nusrat.
Sudan-positive atherosclerotic lesions preferentially occur at downstream and lateral margins of arterial branch ostia in human neonates and weanling rabbits but tend to develop at lateral and upstream margins in old subjects. We investigated (i) the pattern of sudanophilic lesions at aortic ostia of cholesterol-fed adult rabbits and (ii) determined any differences in lesion distribution between descending thoracic and abdominal aorta. Ten adult males, New Zealand white rabbits were fed 2% high cholesterol diet. After six weeks, aortas were excised, opened longitudinally and stained with Sudan-IV for gross examination of atherosclerotic lesions. A total of 156 descending thoracic and 90 abdominal ostia were examined. Mean lesion frequencies upstream,...

Protective effect of policosanol on atherosclerotic lesions in rabbits with exogenous hypercholesterolemia BJMBR
Arruzazabala,M.L.; Noa,M.; Menéndez,R.; Más,R.; Carbajal,D.; Valdés,S.; Molina,V..
Policosanol is a mixture of higher aliphatic alcohols purified from sugar cane wax, with cholesterol-lowering effects demonstrable in experimental models and in patients with type II hypercholesterolemia. The protective effects of policosanol on atherosclerotic lesions experimentally induced by lipofundin in rabbits and rats and spontaneously developed in stumptail monkeys have been described. The present study was conducted to determine whether policosanol administered orally to rabbits with exogenous hypercholesterolemia also protects against the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Male New Zealand rabbits weighing 1.5 to 2 kg were randomly divided into three experimental groups which received 25 or 200 mg/kg policosanol (N = 7) orally for 60 days...
